A new bill in the U.S. House led by Rep. Nancy Mace would establish consistent reporting requirements and enhance transparency among prosecuting offices getting federal funding, the U.S. Congress reports.
Rep. Mace introduced H.R.6982 on Jan. 8, 2026, during the 119th Congress’s regular session. The summary below is based on the official bill text, with added explanation of its main elements.
The legislation would update the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 by setting reporting guidelines for prosecuting offices in jurisdictions with populations above 100,000 that accept grants aimed at combating violence against women. Each chief prosecutor would need to annually deliver a report to the Attorney General including statistics for key case details and outcomes, such as numbers of cases referred, declined charges, plea deals, bail decisions, and sentencing. Standards must be uniform across jurisdictions. The Attorney General would have to share resulting data with congressional committees and publicly disclose it. Consequences for failure to comply could include withholding as much as 50% of grant funds or limiting eligibility for grants going forward.
Mace, a Republican representing South Carolina’s 1st District, was joined by Rep. Randy Fine, a Republican from South Carolina’s 6th District, in sponsoring the legislation.
Rep. Mace has put forward 60 additional pieces of legislation since the session began.
Bills in Congress may start in the U.S. House or Senate, except tax measures, which originate in the House. New legislation is assigned to committees which review, hold hearings, and amend bills before voting. Approval by identical votes in both chambers is needed before legislation advances to the president for signature or veto. Congress meets in two-year sessions, each with two annual periods, and maintains legislative records through Congress.gov.
Nancy Mace represents South Carolina, serving in the One Hundred Seventeenth Congress and its two succeeding terms since Jan. 3, 2021. She was formerly in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2018 to 2020 and previously ran for U.S. Senate in 2014.
Mace completed her B.A. at The Citadel in 1999 and earned an M.S. from the University of Georgia in 2004. Her education also includes study at Trident Technical College and graduation from Stratford High School in 1995.
