The center reported 132 beds as of the first quarter, which was 28 beds more than the county average. Throughout the quarter, it served an average of 111.2 residents.

The CMS rated Pruitthealth Moncks Corner 2 out of 5 overall, trailing the state average of 3 for South Carolina nursing homes.

The Reserve Healthcare and Rehabilitation led in Berkeley County during the quarter with 135 beds, followed by Pruitthealth Moncks Corner. Lake Moultrie Nursing Home was third, offering 88 beds.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate continued growth in the nation’s population of older adults, while youth populations shrink. The population age 65 and older grew by 13% from 2020 to 2024, compared with a 1.7% decline in those under 18. The growth of the older adult population has been significant since 1920, rising from 4.9 million in that year to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study estimates that roughly 28 million older Americans, almost half of those ages 65 and up, may need long-term services and support. The same study finds that over a third could eventually need nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
