U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate continued growth in the nation’s population of older adults, while youth populations shrink. The population age 65 and older grew by 13% from 2020 to 2024, compared with a 1.7% decline in those under 18. The growth of the older adult population has been significant since 1920, rising from 4.9 million in that year to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study estimates that roughly 28 million older Americans, almost half of those ages 65 and up, may need long-term services and support. The same study finds that over a third could eventually need nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
