Congresswoman Nancy Mace called on April 13 for four members of Congress to resign immediately over allegations she said make them unfit to serve, or else face expulsion.
Mace named Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Tony Gonzales, Cory Mills, and Eric Swalwell as the lawmakers who should step down. She said accountability must apply regardless of party affiliation.
“We don’t care what party you’re in. Stealing millions in taxpayer dollars, sexually assaulting your staff, lying about your service record, none of it is acceptable and none of it goes unnoticed,” said Congresswoman Mace. “Dropping out of a race is not accountability. Every one of them needs to resign immediately. The American people deserve a Congress worthy of their trust. The House needs to be cleaned out, and it starts with these four.”
The press release detailed the allegations against each member: Cherfilus-McCormick was found guilty of 25 ethics charges and accused of stealing $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds; Gonzales was accused by former staffers Regina Santos-Aviles and another unnamed individual of sexual harassment; Mills faced accusations including assaulting women and falsifying his military record; Swalwell was accused by multiple women—including a former staffer—of sexual misconduct.
“Congress has serious moral and ethical problems and these four are the face of it. Washington has protected its own for too long. It needs to end now. We’re calling on these four to resign or face expulsion,” Mace added.
Mace currently serves in the U.S. Congress representing South Carolina’s 1st district after replacing Joe Cunningham in 2021 according to her official biography. She previously served in the South Carolina House from 2018 through 2020 as reported by state records. Born at Fort Bragg in North Carolina in 1977, Mace is now based in Charleston according to Ballotpedia. She graduated from The Citadel with a Bachelor’s degree in science in 1999 according to The Citadel.
The call for resignation comes amid heightened attention on ethics within Congress.
