U.S. Census Bureau figures reflect a continuing rise in the nation’s older adult population, while numbers of younger Americans decline. The 65-and-older age bracket grew 13% from 2020 to 2024, while the population under 18 dropped 1.7%. Since 1920, the U.S. older adult population has climbed rapidly, expanding from 4.9 million to over 61 million by 2024.
Research from 2021 estimates about half of these older Americans—approximately 28 million people—will require long-term services and support. Further, the study indicates that more than one-third may eventually need nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an education-focused organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
