Berkeley County School District issued the following announcement on December 16.
Moncks Corner residents may be familiar with the little train that makes an appearance around the holidays to give rides to children; the train is known as the "Mocolotive."
On Wednesday, the train temporarily got renamed to "The Polar Express" when Foxbank Elementary's two special services classes took a few fun laps around the car rider loop in front of the school.
The special services classes have recently conducted a "Holidays Around the World" unit with students. They have learned about the history of Christmas itself, as well as Christmas in Germany, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Diwali and Las Posadas.
Their final “country” was the North Pole and that day, they got to ride the train around the front of the school in connection with having read the popular holiday book, The Polar Express.
In Britney Eidt's class, the students started off the event by listening to an audio version of the book. Eidt asked her students some questions about the book, particularly about the part where the little boy in the book looses the sleighbell he got from Santa Claus.
The students then got their own "train ticket" – each adorned with a little sleighbell – and ventured outside to board the train that the Town of Moncks Corner brought over for the event. After taking a few laps, they were joined by more students from Rebecca Lefkowitz's neighboring class for some additional rides.
The school thanks the Town of Moncks Corner for bringing the train out to the school.
