Brittne Guerry, the 2021 District Teacher of the Year, had a special announcement to make during a recent Berkeley County School District Board Meeting. For the first time, Teacher Forum would be awarding three scholarships – one to the District Teacher of the Year and two student scholarships.
“Cynthia Zimmerman has been awarded the Judy Rainey Passion Project Scholarship,” Guerry said. “This is a $1,000 scholarship that will be utilized toward a service project that connects the classroom to the community anyway the recipient wants. You get to be creative.”
Zimmerman is a fourth grade gifted and talented teacher at Phillips Simmons Elementary who was named the 2022 District Teacher of the Year in April. With a passion for project-based learning, she will undoubtedly put this money to good use.
Additionally, Teacher Forum awarded two student scholarships to graduating seniors for the amount of $2,500 each. To promote work and life skills, one scholarship was awarded to a student who was supremely dedicated to the CTE program and the other was awarded to a student leader in the Teacher Cadet program.
Applications included an essay and rubrics were sent out to high school counselors, teacher cadet program sponsors and CTE teachers this spring to fill out. The Teacher Forum leadership team reviewed and discussed each completed application.
“We were so impressed by the talent, leadership and passion shown by these students’ applications,” Judy Rainey said. “We’re so proud of all of them.”
Samuel Candor won the 2022 Teacher Forum CTE Scholarship because of his heartfelt essay about Stratford High School’s broadcast journalism program. He will attend the University of South Carolina this fall.
Sarah Stoddart, Hanahan High School’s 2022 valedictorian, won the 2022 Teacher Forum Teacher Cadet Scholarship.
“Once Sarah graduates from college, we want her back in BCSD as a teacher in one of our high schools.”
