Parents and community members of Cane Bay, Nexton and surrounding areas gathered at Cane Bay Elementary on Thursday evening for the first of two meetings set to discuss proposed attendance lines for Berkeley County’s newest school scheduled to open in 2023.
There were a little over two dozen families represented at the meeting, during which district officials provided clarification and received feedback from those supportive, uncertain or even disappointed by the proposal.
The meeting was attended and facilitated by Superintendent Deon Jackson, several of his administrators and a handful of school board members.
Mr. Jackson said community meetings like the one that night and the one scheduled for Devon Forest Elementary on Monday, September 26, are an important layer of the process any time changes in attendance lines are considered.
“Changes in attendance lines impact our communities, and we value their feedback,” Mr. Jackson said. “The goal is always to minimize the negative impact of attendance line changes as much as possible. To do that, we need community input.”
The two meetings share a proposal that passed a first reading at the September 13 board meeting. A second and final reading is scheduled for the September 27 meeting of the board.
The Carolyn Lewis School is more than 50 percent complete and scheduled to open in the fall of 2023.
