The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the older adult population nationwide continues to rise even as numbers among younger groups fall. The age 65-plus segment grew 13% from 2020 to 2024, while the number of Americans under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the last century, the country’s older population has expanded significantly, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.
A study from 2021 found that roughly 28 million, or nearly half, of older adults may need long-term services and supports, with over a third anticipated to eventually require nursing home care.
