At Monday night's Berkeley County Council meeting, Council presented a proclamation highlighting the importance of Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week. The week-long celebration of the land and living legacy of the Gullah/Geechee community launches at noon on July 30, 2022 on historic St. Helena Island, South Carolina.
This declaration is to honor the previously enslaved descendants of Africans who still reside in this area and to celebrate the history of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. Councilman Steve Davis presented the proclamation to Marquetta L. Goodwine, who's an author, preservationist, and performance artist also known as "Queen Quet," Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation.
